Coffee break was at a bakery where cream and sugar were combined into a gooey cake to provide maximum calories for a permanently hungry cyclist. This was definitely needed as the ups and downs into a headwind were knackering today. There was less overall climbing than yesterday but for some reason, it felt really tough.
This gorgeous goat was a great excuse to stop and take a breather.
Lunch was at a castle, obviously.
After lunch, the route took us through Mariz, which was emptied of its inhabitants during the communist era to prevent people living anywhere near and escaping over the border with Austria. Nearby is a defence fortification line built by the Czechs from 1935 to 1938 to protect Czechoslovakia from a German invasion. Unfortunately the defences were never used as the region (Sudentenland) had to be surrendered following the Munich Agreement, which of course failed to stop Hitler.
The hotel tonight is in Slavonice which has a traditional medieval renaissance city centre. The hotel itself was stocking up with beer when we arrived - must have heard about the essential beer and cake fuel required by cyclists.
Today’s geeky bike stats...
