Prague

Fortunately dumplings were off the menu last night and I had a delicious dinner at Portfolio Restaurant followed by a deep sleep in a nest-like bed.
Prague is a beautiful city but that obviously means crowds of selfie stick wielding tourists, so I got up early to wander around the main sights before the masses descended.
Buildings with decorative twiddly bits are clearly the thing here.

One of the top tourist sights is Charles Bridge, definitely one to see early in the morning.

I also really wanted to visit Wenceslas Square which was the location of huge demonstrations during the Velvet Revolution. In November 1989, 500,000 people crowded into the square as the communist regime tumbled.

I meandered back to the hotel for a 5 course fantastic breakfast and then set off again. Unfortunately Prague is well known as a destination for delightful stag parties and obviously it was particularly lovely to see a manchild dressed in a blow up penis.

I was going to visit the castle but the volume of people was too much for me and I headed to the Holesovice area and a lovely walk through Letna Gardens with great views over the city.

My guidebook said that the National Gallery at Veletrzni Palac may be Prague’s most underrated museum which I interpreted as likely to be less crowded and I’m so glad I went to it. It was built for holding trade fairs and had the most eclectic art exhibition created to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of Czechoslavakia.

It was all a bit mind boggling but no doubt whatsoever which was my favourite painting - Van Gogh’s Green Wheat.

My phone says that I have walked 20,300 steps and the tree trunks are not impressed, so time for a little napette before more culture this evening at the Rudolfinum for a Prague Vivaldi Ensemble concert.
1 hour later... tree trunks demanded to be fed.... probably the best ever club sandwich!
